Time on the Lake

All about enjoying my time on the lake

Time on the Lake
We took a float plane into a remote lake for 5 days to target wild brook trout in Northern Ontario.

White River Air has a number of remote outpost camps throughout the area, but on this trip we stayed on Pinei Lake near Pukaskwa National Park. The main species in the lake is brook trout (speckled trout). Most of the specks we’ve caught in the past have been from stocked lakes, but this lake has a fully naturally reproducing population.

Pinei Lake is roughly a 15-minute flight south of the base in White River. It’s a relatively small system, about 4 km long and 1.6 km wide, but it has kilometres of river to explore. On this trip, we pulled the boat over beaver dams and through skinny water, travelling down river almost 9 km from the cabin.

The outpost cabin is a 20x20 setup, built with a wood frame and equipped with four built-in bunks with foam mattresses. It includes a gas-powered generator for lights, a wood-burning stove, hot and cold running water, and a full-size propane fridge with a top freezer, along with a 4-burner cooktop and oven. All cooking gear and utensils are provided, and the cabin can comfortably sleep up to six people.

We were also provided with a 14-foot aluminum boat powered by a 7 HP four-stroke outboard motor.

Catch and cook with our favourite fish to eat

They’re small and a pain to clean but have some of the best meat out of all the fish we’ve tried here in Ontario (haven’t tried burbot yet)
Our Favourite Fish To Eat (Catch & Cook)
Lake Simcoe is an incredible fishery, and we’ve had some unreal days out here over the years. Today’s mission was simple: catch enough perch to cook up smashed perch tacos.

I saw this recipe in a MeatEater video with Jay Siemens and Josh McFadden, and I knew I had to try it for myself. Safe to say… it was absolutely delicious and this is 100% going into the regular rotation.

We also tested out an underwater camera for the first time, the MarCum Pursuit SD, and it was super cool being able to actually see the fish reacting below the ice.

If you’re into ice fishing, catch-and-cook videos, and making the most of your time on the lake, you’re in the right place.

Eating The Fish We Catch (Walleye Burger)
We spent 3 nights on Lake Nipissing staying in a bungalow with Bam’s Tours, it was nonstop walleye action!

Fishing with my wife (Cass) and our dog, we hooked into over 250 fish across the trip, including my biggest walleye of the year at 24 inches and Cass’s new PB, an absolute monster 26-inch walleye that we thought was a burbot at first!

From insane morning bites, crazy prime-time, to a hook-in-the-face, and fresh fish tacos made right in the cabin — this trip had everything.

This is how we catch more walleye through the ice...

We usually use 8 to 10lbs fluorocarbon, medium to medium light rods, lures (rattlebait, spoons, jiggin raps) and simple minnow setups like splitshot or dropshot rigs

We're making blackened walleye tacos with the fish right on the ice!

This was part of our 3 night Lake Nipissing trip. We stayed in an on ice bungalow with Bam's Tours. Over the course of our trip my wife and I caught over 250 walleye (many in the slot size).

One of our best ice fishing trips EVER!

Building the ultimate ice fishing tackle box 🧊🎣

This box is made up of my favourite lures for ice fishing in Southern Ontario. For targeting perch, crappie, walleye, trout, and pike, I wanted a setup that covers everything from finesse panfish bites to big predators under the ice.

Things I forgot to show in the video: tip-ups, wire and heavy leaders for pike, and lots of different sized jigs

Everything I used is available at @SAILPLEINAIROUTDOORS

She beat me in Round 1… so this is the REMATCH.

During our Lake Nipissing trip, Cass and I decided to run it back with another 1v1 ice fishing showdown during prime-time walleye hours—and things got competitive fast

We gave ourselves 3 hours to see who could catch more fish in this head-to-head challenge. What started as a friendly rematch quickly turned into some of the best ice fishing we’ve ever experienced.

Over 3 nights on Lake Nipissing, we landed 250+ fish, with nonstop action and unreal prime-time bites. This trip was booked with Bam’s Tours, and it seriously set the bar for ice fishing trips in Ontario.

This video is just a quick 3 hours glimpse into our trip.

Rematch new rules:
3 POINTS: Walleye over slot size (over 45cm/over 17.75")
2 POINTS: Slot size walleye (40 - 45cm/15.75" - 17.75")
1 POINT: Any other fish

This could have been so bad… 😱🤯 but it just stole 20 minutes of prime time fishing hours

We were on day 1 of our 3 night ice fishing trip on Lake Nipissing. The fishing was amazing right from our first drop!

During prime time I got a rattle bait in the face… only a couple inches from eye

Cass had to go full nurse mode. She ended up having to push the barb through and pinch it to get it out.

Lots more coming soon
