Never thought I would be a “content creator” but after posting this video it got me really excited about the idea of creating videos, specifically short vertical videos.

I started off casually posting videos of me and my friends fishing that would barely get any views, there were no plans for these videos and all the editing was done on the app (before they were any good). Most of them were really short and I usually tried to use different “trends”

But once I changed styles, my views and following started to increase. I really went outside of my comfort zone for this one by doing voiceovers telling the viewer the story of each trip to the lake.

Although at this time I was first learning about creating content and about how algorithms worked. I edited everything on my iPhone 13 Pro, I would upload all my GoPro footage to the phone but this process would take FOREVER… It wasn’t until April this year where I finally bought a proper laptop to edit on.

Once I started really planning my videos to engage and keep the audience’s attention is when things started to really happen.

I never thought I’d be able to really make that much money with a relatively small following but there’s lots of brands willing to pay to showcase their products. That plus revenue earned from YouTube Adsense and a few other content creator side hustles I have an opportunity to really give it a go.

I have big plans for the next 12 months and can’t wait to spend more time on the lake. It wouldn’t have been possible without you all, so thank you for all the support on this journey so far, lots more to come.

Contrary to popular opinion- Ice fishing is the best time of year for fishing (at least for me). It’s NOT as scary or intimidating if you take the time to learn proper ice safety and use common sense on the water. If you can deal with the cold…

NO BOAT NECESSARY
When the lakes freeze it gives you the ability to walk to any spot on the lake. Although a snow machine or atv would be helpful, it is not necessary for most people. Packing light is a good strategy when you are fishing a new body of water to cover more ground.

STAYING ON THE SPOT
Once you find the spot, unlike in the open water season, you aren’t fighting the wind to stay on the piece of structure or spot that the fish are feeding. Although you may not be drifting away from the spot, you may have to deal with the wind and cold yourself. Having extra straps for your shelter is essential on those days. I always have a few extras so I can strap all 4 sides and all the corners, which is especially important when…

ICE CAMPING
Ice camping is one of the best parts about the winter months, being able fish continuously for 2 or more days isn’t really as easy during the summer. For my camping seat up I have interlocking foam gym mats to insulate the floor, a Mr. Heater with a 20 lbs propane tank (I always vent your tent and run 2 carbon monoxide detectors), a cot, insulated sleeping pad and bag, and an insulated hut.

SECOND LINE (TIP UP FISHING)
Another nice part about ice fishing (in my area) you can run two lines on most lakes. Meaning you can double your chances at a fish and cover a lot more area but keep in mind you must be within 60m of it (in Ontario) There’s 3 types of set lines I like for my second line. A hand-line tip up, a “jaw jacker” and a “ifishpro” style tip up for a conventional ice rod and reel.

COOKING ON THE ICE
Cooking while your fishing is always really fun, you don’t even need to stop fishing. I don’t know about you but a lot of the time we get the most bites right when we start making food or eating.

SPEND TIME OUTDOORS
It’s really easy to stay instead in the winter but I feel like it makes me feel way better to get out and spend time on the lake, just don’t forget sunscreen!

Ice fishing lake trout for dinner. After my first ice fishing trip for lake trout, we went back up to Northeastern ON to search for lake trout. This time we wanted one to take home for dinner since last time we caught one that was too big and another too small.

This trip we found a couple really nice sized fish on the white tube tipped with some minnow or cisco. It was a grind but always worth it for moments like this!

Can’t wait for the lakes to freeze and the laker season to open up. I have lots of ideas for this season but open to suggestions and would love to collaborate with other creators more often!

I used to love fishing for perch, walleye and pike when the lakes freeze over but lake trout may have changed that for me…

The way the chase up and down the water column is like no other freshwater fish. I’ve seen them chase from over 60 feet deep all the way to the surface just below the ice and back down again..

They are really aggressive and become even more active in the winter. They THRIVE in the cold water... Even spawning in late fall to early winter months (potential under the ice)

Lakers are definetly my favourite species to target through the ice and it’s going to be hard to top.

Where should we go for our next fly-in trip? 🎣

Our last fly-in fishing trip to a remote Northern Ontario outpost camp in 2021 was an amazing experience and the fishing blew my mind, catching walleye after walleye and even though I didn’t get on the giant pike I was looking for. My uncle and Bob both end up with trophy northerns (over 40”)

There’s all different types of fly-in trips from lodges to fully equipped cabins to camping trips but we chose to go to an outpost camp. We had a basic cabin (no electric or plumbing) but it was the right choice for our group and for our budget.

For our flight, cabin, boats, motors and gas for the week it was around $1000 CAD ($750 USD) You can find cheap and more expensive options but we were really happy with our choice of booking with Hearst Air Service.

Been scheming about going on another one but maybe to target some different species.

One of the coolest species I’ve targeted. The Great Lakes have crazy brown trout genetics. These fish grow big compared to a lot of places in the world.

Yesterday I attempted to catch them on my float rod BUT when I got to my spot I noticed my rod was broken…
I went back to the car without taking a cast. The next day I decided to head down to the river with the fly rod (been collecting dust for 5 years)

Even though I’ve live near Lake Ontario my whole life, I had never landed one for myself. Now that I have…I’m hooked

Ice fishing for one of the strongest and most exciting fish that you can target through the ice.

It was out first time fishing for lake trout and it was definitely tough most of the day. We learned a lot and kept pushing until the end of our day.

But catching this fish definitely made our trip up to North Eastern Ontario (Poplar Point Camp) worth it.

The white tube ended up being the ticket. They wouldnt chase any thing else. I even had a similar white tube with blue flake but they completely ignored it. Using 36” MH with 2500 size reel.

After this trip lake trout became my favourite fish to target while ice fishing.

Cant wait to get after it this winter

I have a friend that loves his football, so getting him on the lake on during the NFL season can be tough.

Thanks to my @ankersolix_official power unit we can go fishing and not miss a beat of the game. The Solix c1000 can power this TV all-day on the lake.

I’ve used this unit to charge phones, camera gear, power heated blankets, fridges and even high watt appliances like airfryers.

This unit is a beast.

It was a rainy day but we had a unreal setup in the boat - warm food, the Chief’s game and we were even able to get on some fish.

It was supposed to be a chill day on the lake but we still did really well getting on multiple walleye and some smallmouth bass as well.

My biggest mistake of 2023... 😰

I hooked into something big, potentially the biggest fish of my life but instead of focusing on landing the fish, I was trying to get my camera going...

Worst part is my other camera was already rolling and I didn’t really need to have a second....

Wasn’t the fish I hooked into the day before but still a good fish (seen in previous reel) and makes me eager to get out for that big one before the ice fishing season starts.

Can’t wait to get back on the lake.

My ego couldn’t take getting skunked again…

My wife and buddy wanted some walleye for dinner on this trip but in the morning I battled cold and wind. Although I still couldn’t get those slot sized walleye that I’d be looking for.

After a bunch of spot hopping, I stumbled on a big school of fish off a nearby point BUT I had to quickly head back to the cabin for a date with @dudewipes

Once I got back out I was using a dropshot tipped minnow and 10lbs fluorocarbon, I was getting bit on every drop. Subtle movements were key, slowing moving the line from tight to slack really got the fish going. They were hitting mostly on the fall.

On this lake limits for a sport license are 4 walleye but not more than 1 could be great than 45cm. We caught a lot of fish but ended up with 3 fish total in that slot (for 3 people)

Can’t wait for our next adventure.

Best time of the year for fishing⁉️

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be staying close to home and fishing Great Lakes Tributaries (creek and rivers) There are so many options around the Toronto area and Southern Ontario to target these fish but make sure to check the latest Ontario Fishing Regulations.

A lot of these creeks and rivers are not open all year, leaving only specific places and stretches of river with extended seasons. These regulations change, so it’s important to keep up to date to know the size limits, catch limits, and open seasons for steelhead and brown trout in your area.

I don’t have a ton of experience targeting these fall trout but I have my 13” float rod (spinning combo), a fly rod and I’m ready to learn. Can’t wait to spend time fishing new waters.

Using a new toy to cook one of the most sought aft

Using a new toy to cook one of the most sought after freshwater fish in Ontario. Most restaurants and grocery stores here refer to them as pickerel but most of you probably call them walleye.

They are also my wife’s favorite freshwater fish, to catch and eat. She’s only targeted them a few times but is a natural and always seems to out fish me now.

For our shore lunch we wanted to see what our new Anker Solix c1000 could handle. This unit can power high wattage items like full sized fridges, heaters and more but today we used it to power an airfryer to cook our catch. Although, not the most practical thing if it was a survival situation, it’s great to know that this unit is a beast.

Make sure you spray some oil before tossing them into the airfrier to get them nice and crispy.

Apologies to my wife for not bringing back fish for lunch 😅

I was fishing for lunch when I marked something big. It came back 3 times before I could get it.

I had been catching panfish and smallmouth bass that were relatively small up until this point. But when I hooked into this one, the light action rod made this fish feel massive...

Although for some bodies of water this is an average sized fish, on the lake I was fishing, I’ve never seen one this big here. I decided to throw it back, to help keep the strong genetics going for years to come.

The most efficient way to catch more walleye, simple but effective.

A lot of bass fishermen are familiar with the dropshot rig, using soft plastics but using this rig to present a minnow is an amazing combo during colder seasons. During the fall month smallmouth and walleye often school up so you’ll often catch one while targeting the other.

My setup was made up of a 7’1 ML rod and 3000 size reel, a 10 lbs fluorocarbon leader, 1/0 octopus hook, and a 3/8 oz dropshot ball weight. Using a medium sized shiner was the ticket, as worms and plastics were not working at all.

I like to have a longer tag end to start off the day, then go shorter if necessary but having that long tag end allows your bait to have more range without taking your weight off the bottom.

I’ve caught all sorts of fish on this rig from smallmouth and largemouth bass to perch and other panfish, it is also a great way to set up a deadstick rod during ice fishing season.
